Associate of Arts

These program requirements are for students who enroll in the 2024-2025 academic year.


The Associate of Arts in general studies at University of Maryland Global Campus allows you to pursue your personal, educational, and career goals by developing an interdisciplinary course of study. This program incorporates and emphasizes core competencies, including effective writing and communication; IT and information literacy; mathematical and quantitative reasoning; critical analysis, critical reasoning, and problem-solving; and more.

Program Highlights
  • Strengthen basic skills: Hone techniques in time management, interviewing, problem-solving, decision-making, and collaboration.
  • Take core courses: Study interpersonal communication, writing, literature, news writing, or speech.
  • Build your curriculum: Develop a curriculum that meets your unique learning needs and career interests.
  • Create your own path: Choose 21 credits of courses in any discipline for which you meet the prerequisites.
Required Courses
  • Complete 35 credits of general education coursework
  • Take one 3-credit course in communication, writing, or speech, chosen from the following:
    • (3 Credits, ENGL 102)
    • (3 Credits, ENGL 281)
    • (3 Credits, JOUR 201)
    • Any 3-credit COMM or SPCH courses
    • Any 3-credit WRTG courses (except 486A and 486B)
  • Take one 1-credit course, chosen from the following:
    • (1 Credit, CAPL 198A)
    • (1 Credit, CAPL 198B)
    • (1 Credit, CAPL 198C)
    • Any 1-credit course
  • Complete 21 credits of interdisciplinary electives from any discipline or from one of the following focused elective options. You must have met the prerequisites for these courses in order to meet the curriculum requirements:
    • Accounting and Finance: Take accounting- and finance-related courses.
    • Business and Management: Take ACCT, BMGT, ECON, FINC, HMGT, HRMN, IFSM, or MRKT courses.
    • Computer Studies: Take CMIT, CMSC, CMST, DATA, IFSM, or SDEV courses. Review the course descriptions and technology requirements before enrolling for courses in this area.
    • Criminal Justice: Take CCJS courses.
    • Foreign Language Area Studies: Take sequential courses in a single language, usually numbered 111–112, 114–115, or 211–212. You can also take courses in the culture, history, language, literature, or government and politics of an international area. Email languages@umgc.edu if you have questions about language placement testing.
    • Military History: Take military history-related courses, including courses that may be applicable to the bachelor’s degree in history, such as the following:
      • (3 Credits, HIST 202)
      • (3 Credits, HIST 381)
      • (3 Credits, HIST 462)
      • (3 Credits, HIST 464)
      • (3 Credits, HIST 465)
    • Psychology: Take PSYC courses.
